| Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus,
Canada
The bald eagle is one of 8 species of eagles, of which all have a liking for fish. Dead and dying fish are the staple diet of the bald eagle, but it also takes live fish and catches some birds and mammals. Pairs remain together and reestablish bonds each year with spectacular courtship display, when the birds lock talons in mid-air and somersault through the air together. All populations of this fine eagle have declined, seriously in some areas. It has suffered form the contamination of it's habitat and prey by toxic chemicals and with it's slow breeding rate, it is hard for the species to recover. |
