| Black Bear, Urus americanus, Canada
Black Bears are experts at finding the most nutritious food in their home range, including ants and beetle larvae, which they dig out in rotting tree stumps. During winter, back bears shed the calluses on their foot pads. Sometimes they eat the shed skin, giving rise to the myth that bears nourish themselves during hibernation by sucking on their paws. Bears are the only mammals known to give birth while hibernating. |
