| Rock Hyraxes, Heterohyrax burcei, Tanzania
It is said that the hyrax is the distant cousin of the elephant. Scientists believe that both had common ancestors some 55 million years ago. The elephant and the hyrax both have toenails that are almost hooves. The soles of the Hyrax's feet are moist and rubber like, which gives the hyrax traction on smooth surfaces and steep slopes. |
