| Lesser Flamingo, Phoenicopterus minor,
Tanzania
Lesser flamingos live in enormous flocks on East African great rift lakes. There is little escape from the crowds, even courtship is a social event. At times, groups appear in a state of frenzied trance, gather in a tight mass and move off together on stiff legs, tossing heads up or down in a ritual manner and humming all the time. How a pair bonds to become a couple during the mass ceremony has yet to be fathomed. |
