| Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus, Canada
Every year in late fall the Polar Bears gather along the shores of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada. There they wait for the ice to freeze over until it is strong enough to carry them. While on shore, they spend most of their time sleeping, conserving precious energy, since they have barely eaten for months. The Bears secret to keeping warm in the long cold arctic winter is it's hair. The long outer guard hair is hollow. It traps insulating air and conducts sunlight dow the central tube of the guard hair to warm the black skin beneath the snowy coat. |
