| Willow Ptarmigan, Lagopus lagopus, Canada
The ground dwelling Willow Ptarmigans depend on camouflage for defense. In order to achieve this in the charming background of their northerly range, they adopt different plumage according to the season. The summer plumage is mottled to blend with the forest; during the winter snows, ptarmigans have white plumage with only the tail feathers remaining dark. |
